Ive, Wintour, And Bolton Discuss Apple’s Sponsorship Of Met Ball

Jony Ive Anna WIntour Andrew Bolton Met Ball 2016

When it was announced last week that the theme of the 2016 Met Ball was going to be fashion and technology, it came as surprise. Not only was the theme unexpected, but so were the event’s sponsor (Apple) and co-chair (Jony Ive). The Wall Street Journal had the opportunity to sit down and discuss the upcoming Met Ball (officially themed: ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’) with Ive, Anne Wintour, and Andrew Bolton, who will soon take over as head curator at the Costume Institute.

Speaking to Apple’s involvement, Ive, who is the company’s chief design officer, discussed how wearable devices such as the Apple Watch were pushing the shift from industrial to fashion design. He explains, “As products become more personal, something that is worn on the wrist put us in the space of fashion.” Apple seemingly acknowledges the different between the two design philosophies, bringing onboard Marc Newson, who has experience in both fields, to work on the Apple Watch. Ive recognizes that Apple is just beginning to understand the universe of fashion design, but that it is a perspective which will shape future products.

The accompanying exhibit to the Ball will focus on showing how automation and craftsmanship are equally as valuable in shaping fashion. Bolton explains, “We’re trying to dissolve the dichotomy of the hand and machine, and present it as a continuum of practice.” Jony Ive is fully aligned with the Costume Institute’s view, stating, “It’s a completely false notion that there is inherent value in what is made by hand, or an inherent lack of value in what is made by machine” This is a concept that Ive believes strongly in and embraces in his daily work. While responsible for designing incredibly advanced hardware and software, everything Ive works on starts with hand drawn sketches. Ive details, “I still draw with a pencil and paper every day, and enhance with relevant technology.”

Perhaps the most notable aspect of the 2016 Met Ball theme is the headline grabbing acknowledgement of the growing relationship between fashion and technology. From design, to materials, to manufacturing, to marketing, to retail, the two fields are almost inseparable. And their relationship is only growing tighter, as more and more tech becomes fashion oriented and fashion becomes increasingly tech oriented. Apple’s involvement in such a marquee fashion event symbolizes the company is going all-in as it tries to make personal tech fashionable. The red carpet of the 2016 Met ball should be interesting!

Apple Releases watchOS 2 – Should You Upgrade?

Apple Watch watchOS 2 released

Apple has officially released watchOS2. The update to the Apple Watch was supposed to have been made available to the public last Wednesday, but Apple found a significant bug at the last minute which caused the software to be delayed. Now that it is out, the big question is should you upgrade? While a lot of people take a wait-and-see attitude with new software updates, holding off until a x.1 version to upgrade, we see no reason Apple Watch users should delay in the update. WatchOS 2 feels like the first complete operating system for the device and over the next few months will change the way you use the device. To us, the original 1.0 OS never felt finished and it was well known that Apple pulled features at the last minute to make the April release date.

While watchOS does not have a laundry list of new features like a new version of iOS does, it does bring some very important improvements. The most significant by far is that developers now have the ability to create…

Apple’s watchOS 2 Delayed On Planned Launch Date

Apple Watch watchOS 2 Delayed

Apple contacted various publications yesterday afternoon to help spread the word that watchOS 2 would be delayed. The much anticipated software update to the Apple Watch was supposed to have been available for download yesterday but the company found a significant bug at the last minute. After publicly announcing yesterday’s release date over a week ago, the issue must have been severe and difficult to solve quickly. There is no timetable for the update at this point other than Apple saying it would be available “shortly,” which in Apple parlance could mean anything.

We have played around with what was supposed to be the shipping version of watchOS 2 and it felt stable and quick. But once software rolled out for the new watchOS on the App Store, we were not able to launch any of the updated apps. It would get stuck launching and then crash back to the home screen. While not everyone was experiencing this, a quick browse of web forums showed we were not alone. Rumor is, that was the reason behind the delayed launch. Additionally, we found a couple of random oddities, the largest being a glitch that caused the calendar to erase and re-sync constantly for a few minutes (decimating the battery life). But that only happened once.

Burberry Is First Brand To Launch Apple Music Channel

Burberry Apple Music Channel

Last night, Burberry become the first brand to offer curated music on the Apple Music streaming service. In fact, Burberry is the first brand to officially align with any streaming service to offer curated playlists. The move makes a lot of sense, especially for a fashion brand – music and fashion have long gone hand in hand. By launching a channel of hand-picked music, Burberry is able to express the persona of their brand in a new way and to a new audience. Currently the 3 playlists offered by Burberry; they are focused on British music and are themed around runway shows, emerging artists, and favorite tunes of the company’s Chief Creative Officer / CEO.

Since Apple’s service launched almost 3 months ago, there has been a section of playlists curated by 3rd parties, but those were almost exclusively offered by various publications such as Wired and Rolling Stone. The move into content offered by brands makes a lot of sense and Burberry was a logical first choice, with Apple’s Angela Ahrendts having been hired away from the CEO role at the British fashion company. [We also wouldn’t be shocked to see a Hermès channel launch in the not too distant future.] It will be interesting to see if Burberry maintains the momentum of keeping their channel updated and if other brands will launch similar offerings. Given the ultra-competitive music streaming space, if we had to guess, other brands will shortly launch similar offerings which will be exclusive to different streaming services.

Rebecca Minkoff Continues Tech Push At NYFW

Rebecca Minkoff Drone Watch Charging Wallet

Rebecca Minkoff continued their technology push at NYFW this week. Days after debuting last spring’s runway show in VR, the company announced and released a slew of iPhone and Apple Watch accessories and integrated drones into their fashion show. While not the first designer to make use of drones at a runway show (Fendi was last Fall in Milan), the company stressed using the drones was more than just a gimmick. According to Uri Minkoff, the brand’s CEO and co-founder, the company feels that technology such as drones represent the brand’s vision. Uri is looking forward to a world where pocket-size drones such as Nixie and Lily are common place, saying, “We wanted to incorporate drone technology into the show because the millennial woman is probably going to have her own drone in the next couple of years.” He continued, “In the next couple of years we’ll see the selfie stick go away and maybe we’ll all have personal drones.”

For those who like things a bit more tangible, Rebecca Minkoff has released the first designer Apple Watch bands. Unlike the Apple Watch Hermes, Rebecca Minkoff is selling the bands only (not requiring a Watch purchase) and they are available immediately for between $80 and $100. Also debuting is a line of iPhone wallets with built-in charging capability. The wallets are able to more than double your phone’s battery life and are rechargeable via micro-USB. They include a special case for your phone that allows it to easily slide and lock into place. Like the watch bands, the charging wallets are available immediately; they sell for $120 and are compatible with the upcoming iPhone 6S.

Apple Announces Hermès Version Of Apple Watch

Apple Watch Hermes

Apple has been rumored to be looking to partner with designers in the luxury fashion space. At Apple’s press event today, the company announced the first such partnership: the Apple Watch Hermès. The Watch adds Hermès designed straps constructed of the fashion icon’s incredible leather. It is available in 3 styles: Double Tour (a wrap-around bracelet), Single Tour (a traditional strap), and a cuff. The Hermès version also comes with something else unique – an exclusive, Hermès designed watch face. The watch face is the first analog design for the Apple Watch that highlights the device’s square shape. This is the first time that Apple has offered a watch face unique to a version of the device; from a software standpoint, the $15,000 gold Edition version was identical to the $350 aluminum version. The Apple Watch Hermès costs between $1100 and $1500 and will go on sale in October at select Apple and Hermès stores.

Official iOS Support For Android Wear Arrives Today

iOS Android Wear iPhone

Today Google announced the immediate support of Android Wear devices with iOS. Google’s official iOS Android Wear app launches today and will unlock an entire ecosystem of wearable devices to iOS users. To start with, only 3 devices will be iOS compatible: the Huawei Watch, the Asus ZenWatch 2, and the LG Watch Urbane (which is the only watch of the 3 available to buy today). Moving forward, all future Android Wear watches will be compatible. Unfortunately, the bargain priced first version of the Moto 360 is left out of the iOS party.

From a functionality stand point, without the deep, system level hooks Apple is able to use for the Apple Watch, the Android Wear experience is a bit shallower. You aren’t able to edit your iCloud based calendar, reply to iMessages, or respond to emails through Mail. You also cannot currently install any third party apps or watch faces onto Android Wear devices, because they depend on the Google Play store. The good news is that
