Manus x Machina Met Ball Gala 2016 Apple Wearable Technology Fashion Tech

It is the first Monday of May which means tonight is one of the biggest fashion events of the year: the Met Gala. But tonight’s formal event is not the only notable happening at the Metropolitan Museum, the Ball also marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. As part of the official opening of “Manus x Machina” Apple’s Chief of Design, Jony Ive, spoke about the relationship between technology and craftsmanship. The exhibit focuses on the dichotomy between handmade haute couture fashion and machine made fashion, exploring some of the newest technology in fashion including thermo-shaping, laser cutting, and 3D printing. During Jon Ive’s speech, he encouraged an open mind as technology becomes a larger and larger part of fashion, pointing out that all crafts depend on tools or methods that were at one point new:

Hermès Introduces New Apple Watch Bands To Be Sold Separately

Hermès Apple Watch Bands April Spring 2016 Stand Alone

Apple has announced that for the first time Hermès Apple Watch bands will be available as a separate purchase. Previously if you wanted the leather bands from the French design house, you had to purchase the Hermès Edition Watch, the cheapest version of which was $1,100. All three styles of band are available as a stand-alone purchase. The least expensive option is the Single Tour band (think – regular watch band) which retails for $340 and is available in 38mm and 42mm sizing. The next step up is the Double Tour, designed to wrap around your wrist twice, for $490 (38mm only). Finally, the most expensive option is the cuff band for the 42mm Apple Watch; it lists for $690! To mark the occasion, Hermès has also updated the colors offered. Besides the signature Fauve color (tan), they have added Feu (fire), Bleu Saphir (dark blue), Bleu Paon (peacock blue – 38mm only), and blanc (white – 38mm only). The new bands go on sale April 19th and will continue to only be available online, at select Apple Stores, and at Hermès boutiques.

Why Mobile Payment ATMs Signal The End Of Debit Cards

Chase BoA Bank of America Wells Fargo ATM eATM NFC Apple Pay Android Pay Samsung Pay

While paying for things at retail is getting simpler and faster everyday thanks to mobile payment systems such as Apple Pay, the ATM experience has only gotten worse over the past 6 months. The introduction of the EMV chip on debit cards means we have returned to the olden days, where ATMs hold onto your card until the transaction is complete. Recently, while I was waiting the 30+ seconds it now takes for the cash machine to simply read my card, I pondered, “Wouldn’t it be amazing if I could just walk up to an ATM and use Apple Pay / Android Pay to get my cash out.”

Either the ATMs are mic’d or I am not the only one who has thought this because 3 out of the 4 largest US banks almost simultaneously announced that they plan to roll out contactless-payment ATMs. Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo will all begin the process of upgrading their machines this year. BoA will be the first to market, intruding NFC equipped terminals by the end of February at selects retail banks in NYC, Charlotte, Boston, Silicon Valley, and San Francisco. Though the bank has told employees not to disclose which mobile payment services it will be compatible with, it is tough to imagine that the ATMs won’t at least support Apple Pay and Android Pay. If a bank’s debit card is already compatible with a mobile payment service, integration should be trivial. (Perhaps Apple is asking banks not to announce Apple Pay integration so the company can make a big announcement at their rumored upcoming March press event.)

Apple Watch Estimated To Have Over 50% Of Smartwatch Market

Apple Watch 50 percent smartwatch market sales majority dominant android wear pebble samsung martian

While Apple still isn’t releasing any numbers, a new report from Juniper Research estimates that the company’s Apple Watch now controls over half of the smartwatch market. This echoes similar numbers from IDC from before the holidays. If true, this is big news for the California based company, which was notably late to enter the segment. The Apple Watch has only been shipping for slightly more than 8 months, while Samsung and Pebble have been selling smartwatches since 2013 and Android Wear started shipping almost 2 years ago. Juniper believes that Apple has secured 52% of the smartwatch market. Android Wear, on the other hand, comprised less than 10% of the year’s smartwatch shipments and Samsung’s Gear S2 barely made an impact. No word on Pebble’s take, but we would suspect that they also are around 10% of the market. One of the most interesting aspects of the report from Juniper is that simple smartwatches, such as the non-display models, are proving extremely popular. These devices offer activity tracking and, at most, notifications, but no apps or deeper connectivity. Specifically mentioned in the report is Martian, which produces connected watches similarly priced to a Fitbit. It is easy to see how a device like that could serve as “trial” watch, allowing the customer to see what they think of smartwatches without spending a large amount of money. Oddly, the report also mentions the popularity of a connected Guess watch and Breitling timepiece, both of which sell for more than the Apple Watch… the Breitling is actually closer to Apple Watch Edition territory.

Apple Watch One Of The Most Searched Consumer Electronic

Google Year In Search 2015 Apple Watch Consumer Technology wearables

This week Google released it’s annual “Year In Search” report. The search giant compiles categorized lists of some of the most searched terms of 2015. Once you get over the fact that Rickrolling is still one of the world’s top meme’s and that the number 2 travel question is “Where is Disneyland?”, there are some pretty interesting trends displayed in the lists. The one that particularly caught our eye was the summary of the most searched consumer electronics. Only one wearable device broke the top 10 and it was the Apple Watch (which landed in 3rd place). While there are likely better selling wearables on the market, none of them proved to be able to generate close to the amount of interest and mindshare as the Apple Watch.

While a wearable breaking onto the top 10 of the consumer electronic list is a huge deal, it is not surprising that it was an Apple device. The company has an incredible PR and press machine, generating consumer interest and press with merely supply chain rumors; in fact, 3 out of the top 5 products on the list are made by Apple. Whatever your feelings are about Apple, if you are a fan of wearable technology this is great news. What was a niche product category barely 12 months ago, is now one of the top searches in the world. If consumers are so keenly aware and curious about the Apple Watch, chances are that interest will spread to other products in the category! Hopefully this is a sign of amazing things to come for wearables in 2016.
