Sony Planning To Bring FES E-Paper Watch To Retail

Sony FES Watch retail

Almost exactly a year ago we took a look at a Japanese crowdfunding campaign for a watch whose both face and straps were constructed of e-paper screens. Using these screens, the appearance of the FES Watch could be customized with the press of a button. The fundraising effort was incredibly successful, exceeding expectations, but then things took a surprising twist. The unknown company behind the FES Watch was actually Sony. The electronics giant made the shocking announcement, explaining that it was using crowdfunding to judge interest in projects that might otherwise not of brought to market without the ‘Sony’ name influencing opinions.

Sony has just announced that the FES watch will now be available to purchase at select retailers in Japan, including the Omotesando MoMA Design Store (Nov 21st) and the Shinjuku Isetan department store (Dec 1st). It is interesting that the e-ink watch is being sold at the MoMA store; it is the only non-US location of the museum’s store and, while no announcements have been made, might suggest a future US launch.

The FES Watch will sell for approximately $240, compared to $170 during its crowdsourcing. It has 24 different designs that can be chosen at a moment’s notice by simply pressing a button on the side. Thanks to its e-ink screen and absence of any ‘connected’ technology, the watch features 2 year battery life and uses a standard button battery. It is waterproof and only weighs 43 grams. Head past the break for an amazing video showing how its screen technology can be cut into pieces and still function!

Sony Introduces Citizen Designed Analog Smartwatch

Sony Wena Analog Smartwatch

Sony has launched an analog smartwatch on their crowdfunding site First Flight. The watch is called Wena, which stands for “wear electronics naturally.” It consists of two parts, a traditional watch face and a metal band with integrated smartwatch functionality. While not as full featured as Sony’s other smartwatches, Wena was created to be a fashion piece. It was designed by Citizen Watch Co. and is crafted from high grade stainless steel. Sony is offering two styles of the watch, a tradition 3 hand analog watch face and a chronograph face. While the Wena is sharp looking, at first glance you would never assume it was anything beyond a traditional watch. The metal link band discretely houses batteries for the electronics that have been hidden inside the deployment buckle. Wena will have 3 main “smart” functions: NFC payments, activity tracking, and notification alerts via vibrations and a LED in the buckle. The battery life of the band is approximately 1 week while the watch face will run for between 3 and 5 years (depending on the model).

While it may seem curious that a company the size of Sony would have their own crowd funding website, the company has found success with it. The idea behind First Flight is to test interest in products that Sony is unsure how the public might react to. From the looks of it, Wena is a hit. Despite a high price tag (approximately $290 to $580) Sony has reached their fundraising goal and almost every model is sold out. Wena is expected to ship next April. While the watches available via First Flight are only for the Japanese market, the success of Wena makes an international launch at some point very likely. It is fantastic that Sony has been able to utilize crowd funding to find itself again and release products that are able to excite consumers.

Dull Sony Smartwatch 3 Gets New Look

Sony Smartwatch 3 Stainless Steel Android

Sony’s Smartwatch 3 was released in late 2014 to excellent reviews. The largest criticism though was the aesthetic design of the device, which was universally considered as boring as its name. Well the Smartwatch 3 has received a new stainless steel coat of paint. The metal version of the Android Wear watch is expect to launch at an unspecified time in 2015 for an unspecified price. The rubberized version of device is currently on the market for $250 so hopefully it won’t deviate significantly. Beyond the revamped exterior, the metal version of the Sony Smartwatch 3 is unchanged. It still features a 1.6″ 320×320 display, is fully dust and waterproof (IP68), and has GPS. If all this sounds like a winning combination, remember that unlike Sony’s earlier efforts, the Smartwatch 3 runs on Android Wear and thus requires an Android phone.

Sony Shows Off Its Vision Of A Wearable Display

Sony AttachSony’s vision of a wearable display allows you to attach the device to whatever your eyewear of preference is. The Sony Attach is designed to be a stand alone unit that you attach (surprise) to your own glasses. Unfortunately, for the time being there is a large caveat: it has to be a compatible set of eyewear. But the company promises a host of mounting options (including adhesive) that should provide a fairly broad swath of compatible frames. While this is great news, I would be hesitant to expect anything compatible from any Luxottica brands (the company is both a Google Glass partner and developing its own smart devices with Intel). Sony’s Attach is very similar to Google Glass, providing a micro-sized screen in front of the right eye. The device on display at CES is not a finished product, so it is not clear how one interacts with the device, how much it would cost, or if it will even make it to market.

In Surprise Twist: FES is really Sony

FES Watch Is Really Sony

The other week we wrote about a crowdfunded piece of tech in Japan called the FES Watch. The e-ink based watch was on its second successful turn at raising money through a Japanese equivalent of Kickstarter, Makuake. This week, things took a decidedly Scooby-Doo like turn when the mask was peeled off of Fashion Entertainments (FES) to reveal that it really is Sony. As it turns out, Fashion Entertainments is a Sony unit created to explore how to utilize e-paper in fashion. Utilizing the FES name instead of “Sony” allowed the team to gain a better understanding of interest and demand, without a brand name coming into the mix. Before Sony came clean about its FES involvement, there was some confusion after Sony said it was working on an unique e-ink watch and band, with media outlets pointing to the FES watch as having already beaten them to the punch. People in Japan who preordered the device should expect to receive it in May of 2015. Hopefully with it being a Sony product, the clever customizable watch will launch in other markets also.

Mobile World Congress Sees Wearable Tech Going Mainstream

Mobile World Congress

The biggest news coming out of Barcelona at this year’s Mobile World Conference was not a mobile phone, but instead wearable tech, specifically watches.  With Samsung having already tested the waters, albeit unsuccessfully, and Apple rumored to release a watch-like device later this year, a slew of companies arrived in Barcelona ready to show off their vision of smart, wearable devices.  From sport bands, to glasses, to watches, wearable seems to of officially had it’s coming out party!
