Everything You Need To Know About Nike’s HyperAdapt Sneaker Launch

HyperAdapt 1 Black Colorway How Buy Nike self lacing Grey White

If you weren’t lucky enough to win one of Nike’s functional reproductions of the self-lacing Mag sneaker from Back To The Future, don’t fret; something arguably more exciting is launching this week. Sure, the Mags were amazing from a retro-cool perspective, but on December 1st Nike is launching the first mass produced self-lacing sneaker. Named HyperAdapt 1.0, the sneakers represent the future of where the footwear giant believes their industry is headed.

While the easiest way to describe the HyperAdapt 1.0 is “self lacing,” Nike isn’t a big fan of the term and favors referring to the tech as “adaptive fit.” That likely comes from the fact that the HyperAdapt is a direct descendant of the Mag. When the Mag was original created for Back To The Future 2, the designers at Nike wanted to create a futuristic vision of a better athletic sneaker, something that would come alive and sense you, adjusting to the shape of your foot. In other words, adapt to you. After the release of Back To The Future 2, there was a huge outpouring by fans for Nike to create an actual Mag and bring it to market. As the years passed, the requests kept coming in and at a certain point teams within Nike started to brainstorm whether such technology could actually be created and designed to fit within a shoe. After nearly three decades of discussions and 11 years of R&D, the HyperAdapt 1.0 became a reality. The shoes are truly the Nike Mag reimagined for today.

Today Is Your Last Chance To Enter To Win Nike Mag Sneakers

Nike Mag self adaptive lacing 2016 raffle back future

Today is your last day to enter for a chance to own Nike’s self lacing Mag sneakers. Based on the iconic shoes from Back To The Future 2, Nike last week announced the availability of the footwear. Like the 2011 release of the non-self-lacing version, the shoe is extremely limited in quantity; only 89 pairs are being made available. Last year, when the shoes were originally announced, it was stated they would be released via auction in Spring 2016. Nike not only missed their Spring release date, but the shoes also aren’t available via auction. For most of us though, that isn’t necessarily bad news. Unless you had a tremendous amount of money to drop on a pair of sneakers (which you more than likely would never risk wearing), there was no chance you would own a pair. At some point over the past 12 months Nike had a change of heart and instead decided to raffle the shoes off. Virtual raffle tickets can be purchased from $10 a piece from Nike and all proceeds go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Even if you don’t win, you are helping a fantastic nonprofit in their efforts to cure Parkinson’s. Today is the last day to enter to win an elusive Nike Mag; the drawing closes at 11:59pm ET. If you have been on the fence about entering or have been thinking about buying some additional tickets, to help encourage you the Michael J. Fox foundation will match dollar-to-dollar all donations today!

Self Lacing Nike Mags From Back To The Future 2 Launching October 4

nike mag self lacing sneaker release back to the future 2015 2016

While originally announced to be released this past Spring, all signs are pointing to the self lacing Nike Mag finally debuting tomorrow, October 4th. The sneakers were first teased almost a year ago, on Back To The Future Day, when Nike released a video of Michael J. Fox trying on a pair of the shoes. Today they were teased again, this time on the Nike SNKR app. Nearly identical to the futuristic footwear featured in the movie, the Mags have LED lighting and, most importantly, laces which automatically tighten around your foot. Nike has been working on the tech for some time and even plan to release a more commercial sneaker featuring the tech by the end of the year.

Nike Announces First Mass Produced Self Lacing Sneaker

HyperAdapt 1.0 nike self lacing tying sneaker Nike+

There was a lot of excitement last October when Nike unveiled that it was actually going to release the self-tying Nike Mag from Back To The Future 2. Unfortunately the sneakers, which launch next month, will be very limited in quantity and only available via auction (which translates to prices possibly north of $10,000). That means the dream of “futuristic” self-lacing shoes is still only a dream for most of us…that is until last night when Nike announced the HyperAdapt 1.0. The HyperAdapt 1.0 will be the first mass produced self-tying sneaker. When you slide the shoe on and press your heel down, the laces engage and automatically tighten around your foot. Small buttons on the side of the shoe allow you to make micro adjustments to the tightness, either loosening or tightening the laces as needed. If your feet swell when you run, no need to stop, re-adjust, and re-tie your shoes, just tap the loosen button. Eventually Nike envisions shoes that will automatically sense when they need to adjust their fit and make the necessary tweaks. If you liked the bling from the Nike Mags, you can rest soundly because the new HyperAdapt also has LED lights. The HyperAdapt 1.0 is expected to launch in time for the holidays and we are guessing it will be on a lot of wish lists (we cannot wait to get our hands on a pair)! Pricing has not be announced, but no matter what it will cost less than a pair of Mags would set you back. When the shoes launch, they will be available exclusively through the Nike+ app. Speaking of which, the app is about to receive a shopping oriented makeover in the coming months [the Nike+ running app needs lots of updates but shopping was not one of them, just restore our map data you lost last summer and fall Nike!].

Self Lacing Nike Sneakers Officially Launching In 2016 (UPDATED)

Nike Air Mags Self Lacing Back To The Future 2 Power

UPDATE: Nike has posted about Michael J. Fox’s pair #1 of the new Nike Mags. The post also (sadly) confirms the sneakers will only be released via a limited auction, similar to the 2011 version. Hopefully it is easier to obtain than a Pepsi Perfect.

While it might be missing the October 21st, 2015, Back To The Future Day, Nike will debut sneakers with a self lacing mechanism in Spring 2016. In a video posted to the MichaelJFox.org twitter feed, we see the Back To The Future star put on a pair of Air Mags with “power laces.” Much like in the movie, Marty Michael J. Fox is in shock as the sneakers tighten around his foot. We have to admit, there is something amazing, and slightly mind melting, about seeing him pull on the Air Mags just has he did on this day in the fictional 2015.

Currently little is known other than the tweet stating that it is real and coming next year. No word on if the self lacing technology will debut in a pair of Air Mags, but it would be a HUGE shame is it did not. “Spring 2016” cannot come soon enough! Oh, and Nike, please do all the fans a favor and not limit this to only a few hundred pair again.

Self Lacing Nike MAGs Are Confirmed for 2015 Release

Nike Mag Self LacingIt was one of the first posts on our blog and it is back in the news again, almost exactly a year later. We have finally reached 2015, the Future from Back To The Future 2. We don’t have flying cars, commercial hover boards, holographic billboards, or Jaws 19. But Miami does have a baseball team and, if Nike has their way, we will finally be able to own self-lacing Nike MAGs. Tinker Hatfield is the man who designed the original MAG for the 1989 movie and he still works for Nike. He took the stage in Long Beach recently at an event for the Agenda Trade Show. Among the topics discussed was a possible 2015 re-launch of the MAG sneakers but this time with a self-lacing mechanism. Hatfield confirmed that he has a team working hard to deliver the MAGs in 2015, stating that they still have “11 and two-thirds months left in 2015.” Last year Nike filed for a self-lacing patent, depicting a shoe very similar to the MAGs (images after the break). It would be safe to expect the shoes to be released either around the 30th anniversary of the original movie in July or near the October 21st date that Doc and Marty jump to. Hopefully the 2015 version of the MAGs will not be as limited run as the 2011 version.
