2015 Gift Guide: Smartwatches

2015 Gift Guide Smartwatch_v2

Last year we really witnessed the launch of the smartwatch. This year the market became much more mature, crowded, and competitive. We saw everyone from the Chinese to the Swiss, from traditional watchmakers to startup companies, releasing devices. We are also closing out the year with smartwatches having a higher average price than at the beginning of 2015. Existing players increased their prices and new entries averaged around $350 – there are even some device priced well over a $1,000 and you can buy a gold Apple Watch for $17,000! Smartwatches are probably still not mature enough for everyone, but they might provide a set of compelling features that you (or a loved one) have been longing for.

Around Circuits And Cable Knit, we love them for looking at our calendar or the temperature outside with a glance. Also the ability to quickly and easily read and reply to text messages without digging out our phones is amazing. But perhaps the most amazing thing about smartwatches is how everyone uses the device in a different way. Almost daily I use my watch to easily check in on Swarm, receive breaking news alerts, check the wait for an MTA bus, and to pay for things.

If a smartwatch sounds right for someone you know, here are some of the most notable from the past year:

iOS Pebble Users Can Now Send Text Replies

Pebble Time Steel Round iOS Text Reply

Up until now, if you were an iPhone user and wanted a wearable device that allowed you to respond to text messages, your only choice was the Apple Watch. Unlike Android, Apple keeps a large number of its API’s private, including the ones that enable interaction with the Messages app. These restrictions are done for security reasons, but it results in Apple devices and software achieving a level of integration that is not possible via 3rd party hardware and apps.

Pebble, though, has been hard at work figuring out a way around these limitations. Beginning with a beta feature in Pebble Time OS 3.7 catchily named iOS Text Reply, iOS users on AT&T can send pre-set text responses directly from their Pebble smartwatch. It might seem odd that AT&T mobile service is required for a software feature, but Pebble is achieving the SMS work-around by sending the messages directly through the carrier. This unfortunately means the solution is less than perfect; any messages you send will not show in your Messages app and texts will be sent as SMS messages that count against your monthly limit. Also worth noting, AT&T requires you to have a post-paid account to activate this feature and it is only available on Pebble Time, Time Steel, and Time Round devices.

It is really fantastic that a company has finally engineered a way around Apple’s messaging limitations, but the solution is so un-Apple-like I will be curious to see if many people use it. The way the work-around is implemented, Pebble has an incredibly complicated road ahead of them, needing to work with every possible carrier and adjust the software to the carriers’ protocols. Things are also messy from the user perspective, your half of the conversation does not show up in the Messages app – you have no record of what you communicated. Honestly though, kudos to Pebble for what they have achieved! But the real solution is for Apple to become more lenient with some of their private API’s. While allowing any developer access to Messages in a horrible idea (think of all of the spam Candy Crush could text your friends), select and vetted developers should have access. But ultimately, perhaps this all circles back to Apple not wanting other devices to be able to squarely compete with their own wearable.

Pebble Introduces Pebble Time Round Smartwatch

Pebble Time Round

Pebble has announced its first round smartwatch. The device is part of their line of Time devices released earlier this year and is called Pebble Time Round. As you would expect, it therefore shares the same operating system and screen technology as its sibling devices, the Time and Time Steel. Pebble claims Time Round is the “thinnest and lightest smart watch in the world; it has a 38.5mm face, is 7.5mm thick, and weighs in at 28 grams (I would be curious to know if their weight measurement includes the band or not because the Apple Watch Sport weighs 25 grams without a band). While Pebble has been able to reduce the size and weight of the new device, it has come at a cost. The Time Round only has a 2 day battery, compared to the Time Steel’s 10 days, and has lost a lot of its water-resistance, only able to withstand a shower versus being able to swim with the other two models. The good news regarding the battery life is that Pebble has developed a rapid charging feature which provides 24 hours of charge in 15 minutes. The device is available in black with a black bezel, stainless with a white bezel, and (surprise) rose gold with a white bezel for $250.

It is nice to see that Pebble decided not to turn to Kickstarter and instead released the new smartwatch in a more traditional manner. The company faced a lot of criticism when it returned to the crowdfunding site to release their 2nd device this Spring. The problem is, the company is still fulfilling orders placed through that campaign and there are likely a lot of customers who would have preferred the round watch but are stuck with an unfilled (or a just fulfilled) order for the older square design. The company needs to be careful because they are risking alienating their strongest advocates. Also, I am guessing the $50 credit they are offering owners of other Pebble Time devices is not going to mend a lot of fences. Next for Pebble, the company needs to solve the bezel issue on their watches; they are huge. With the round face, the bezel seems to jump out even more. The company seems to at least recognize how awkward the bezel is since they are offering two separate designs for it – you can purchase a Time Round with a terraced bezel or with 3, 6, 9, and 12 etched into it like a clock.

Rumor That Pebble Is Having Financial Troubles

Pebble Financial Troubles

Despite the staggering $20M that Pebble recently raised through Kickstarter, word is the company is facing a financial hurdle. According to an article by TechCrunch, Pebble has been making the VC rounds looking for a $5M loan with a $5M line of credit and has been facing a lot of closed doors. The young company eventually settled on a bank loan “in order to stay afloat.” Failure to raise VC money paints an unfavorable view of how the company’s current direction and roadmap are being perceived. Apparently there is a feeling from both inside and outside of the company that Pebble is not doing enough to directly compete against the completion, including Apple and Android. Besides battery life, it is tough to pin point exactly what the competitive advantages of the Pebble Watch are. They are not the cheapest, the most advanced, or uniquely durable. One of the feathers in Pebble’s cap used to be the company’s “indie” status but now there are other “indie” companies offering better and more competitive watches, such as Olio.

Pebble was one of the first true smartwatches to market and helped define the market segment. Hopefully the company will continue to innovate and shape the market and not end up like other first movers (i.e. Rio Audio).

A Case For Smartwatches

A Case For Smartwatches

The wearable technology industry has had a heavy pause for the past several weeks as it awaits the launch of the Apple Watch. The device, launching on April 24th, is viewed by many as the bellwether of consumer interest, and perhaps understanding, of wearable connected technology. With mixed reviews starting to roll in for the Apple Watch, it is clear that these smart devices have an uphill challenge. A watch that displays all the same information that is presented in more detail inches away on your phone is a tough sell. Perhaps, though, we are thinking of a smartwatch through the same lens that we think about a smartphone, when the way we interact with it should be something entirely new and different.

Pebble Turns To Kickstarter To Launch Pebble Time

Pebble Time Kickstarter

Pebble has returned to its roots to launch the next version of the company’s smartwatch via Kickstarter. While it might seem like a bit of a cheat for a successful company to turn to Kickstarter to launch a product that they know will be a hit, that didn’t seem to put off interested buyers. In fact, Pebble Time broke its fundraising goal of $500K in 17 minutes and earned over $5M within 5 hours. The recently completed Kickstarter raised a total of $20.34M, shattering the previous Kickstarter record of $13.3M for The Coolest Cooler.

The Pebble Time utilizes a low resolution color e-ink screen (144 x 168) that is capable of displaying 64 colors. This screen affords the device an impressive 7 day battery life. It is important to note though that it is not a touch screen; you are restricted to the four buttons along the side and a microphone (that has limited use). Pebble Time will also bring the introduction of a new interface concept from Pebble.

Gift Guide 2014: Smartwatches

Gift Guide 2014 Smartwatches2014 was without a doubt the coming out party for smartwatches. They are the perfect gift for that person on your list who is always “connected.” Smartwatches offer a significantly more engaging experience than a fitness band. While they might not track everything a fitness band does, most do offer some form of activity tracking. Smartwatches offer a much deeper connection to your smartphone though, connecting to apps and allowing you to interact with your phone from your wrist. Some are even fully self-contained phones.
