New York Fashion Week Struggles To Find Self Amongst Changes

NYFW New York Fashion Week Logo Redscout

With less than a month to go, we can’t wait for the kickoff of New York Fashion Week. We always get excited to see the new styles and how designers incorporate technology into those looks. This September though, NYFW finds itself in a very different position versus 12 months ago. The marquee fashion event not only has a new look this year but has also been kicked out of its home for the past 5 years and has lost its title sponsor. Change isn’t always bad though, and after several years of stagnation, the question is whether these shifts can help bring some of the gleam back to the New York event or has NYFW become passé.

In 1993, NYFW moved from press events scattered around NYC to a consolidated event with a centralized venue in Bryant Park. Bryant Park was chosen not only because it is a crown jewel of NYC, visited as much by tourists as by Manhattanites, but also because of its proximity to the garment district (the original name of the event was 7th on Sixth). Intel’s MICA (or My Intelligent Communication Accessory) (UPDATED)

Intel's MICA By Opening Ceremony

UPDATE: Intel / Opening Ceremonies have posted a marketing video (starring Rashida Jones!) of MICA in action. Head past the break.

Intel hasn’t made it a secret that it wants to be part of the wearable technology movement. This month at NYFW, Intel along with design partner Opening Ceremonies debuted MICA (which stands for My Intelligent Communication Accessory). According to Intel “if you take a tech company and make a wearable, it looks like a tech-company wearable.” The company believes that by forming strategic partnerships with companies already in the fashion space, they will be able to create more compelling wearable devices. The high-end MICA bangles were designed by Opening Ceremonies to be true fashion pieces without sacrificing usability. MICA features a curved touchscreen, 3G connectivity, and wireless charging. The bangles are covered in snake skin and feature stones such as obsidian and tiger’s eye. Intel expects the bangle to go on sale in time for the holidays at a price around $1000. It will be available at Barney’s and from Opening Ceremony.

Ralph Lauren Uses 4D Tech Instead Of Runway Show

Ralph Lauren Polo 4DWith the opening of Ralph Lauren’s flagship Polo store occurring this week, the company decided to create a large scale spectacle for its NYFW Spring 2015 show. Instead of models and a runway, the company is utilizing a new water projection technology to show off its collection. Water is sprayed approximately 5 stories into the air and images are projected from behind onto it. The effect is a video that feels holographic. Head past the break for a video of it in action. Models were shot wearing the clothing against a green screen and then a virtual New York City environment was created for their surroundings. The cost of the show is said to be substantial but experts believe the expense is likely worth it.

Rebecca Minkoff Teams With Case-Mate On Wearable Tech

Rebecca Minkoff Wearable TechAnother designer is throwing their hat into the ring of wearable technology. So far we have seen Diane Von Furstenberg Google Glass, Tory Burch Fitbits, and Ralph Lauren Polo Tech shirts, now Rebecca Minkoff is launching two wearable bracelets. The bracelets will debut at the designer’s New York Fashion Week show on September 5th. Following the trend established by other fashion designers, the technology is being designed by an outside company, in this case Case-Mate. Specifically designed not to look tech-y, the bracelets give up functionality for the sake of design.
