Fossil Group Planning To Introduce 100 Wearables In 2016

Fossil Group 100 New Wearables 2016 Smartwatch watch activity tracker tory burch Kate Spade Adidas Burberry 3

We have said it before, 2016 is poised to become the most important year for wearable technology yet – and we don’t seem to be alone in that thought. Fossil Group has announced plans for at least 100 new wearable devices this year. While you let that soak in, let’s look at what the company has been up to over the past few months. Since October, Fossil Watches has released 5 wearables devices across at least 12 SKUs. In November, Fossil Group acquired activity tracker company Misfit and has since announced 2 new products across at least 3 SKUs. That is right, at least 15 new wearables device SKUs in less than 3 months! This is a company that is prepared to take the wearable category very seriously!

The Misfit Ray Is The Company’s First Radically New Wearable

Misfit Ray Fitness Activity Tracker New Design Watch Necklace

Notice anything different about the new Misfit Ray – that’s right, it’s not round. The Misfit Ray represents a major move beyond the disc-like design of the Shine and Flash. Shaped like a AAA battery, only shorter and slightly wider, the new wearable is a radicle redesign from a company that thus far hasn’t veered from its original design. The new shape means new ways of wearing the device, which also means new accessories. Misfit envisions wearing the Ray on your wrist with either a leather, woven fabric, or rubber band. The Ray can also be worn around your neck, attached on one end (like a pendant) to either a metal or woven fabric necklace. Unfortunately, if you were expecting anything else new from the device you will be disappointed. But that isn’t all bad news; Misfits have a fantastic 6 month battery life that is continued in the new activity tracker. Ray also borrows some of the Shine 2’s best new features including vibrating notifications utilizing a multicolor LED light and a capacitive touch surface to do things such as take a photo or control your music. The Ray ships this Spring and is currently available for preorder for $99.99. The price also includes a TPU rubber wristband. For $119.99 you can preorder the Ray with a leather band.

2015 Gift Guide: Activity Trackers

2015 Gift Guide Activity Trackers

Activity trackers are easily the most popular and most mature category of wearable technology. People love to quantify their daily movement. Fitbit, for example, is the number one wearable device maker, selling 11 million devices in 2014; They went public this summer and have a market cap of over $6 billion. Fitbit’s numbers don’t mean it’s the best fitness tracker though. 2015 saw a lot of new players entering the market while a lot of existing players pushed expectations of what your dollar could get you. As these trackers begin to include more and more connected functionality, such as notifications and payment abilities, at lower and lower prices, the segment is likely only to grow.

Whether you or a loved one are looking for a wearable to help you monitor your general fitness or need a connected device but aren’t ready for a smartwatch, we have assembled a list of the fitness wearables that most deserve your attention!

The Misfit Flash Gets Bedazzled By BaubleBar For The Holidays

The Misfit Flash Gets Bedazzled By BaubleBar For The Holidays Target Helena Necklace Bracelet

Misfit’s tiny, plastic Flash fitness tracker became a very compelling option this year thanks to a price drop and the ability to control connected devices. The only problem…no style. The Flash is really plain, lacking the elegance and polish of its more expensive sibling, the Misfit Shine (not to mention the Swarovski Shine). Headed into the holidays, Misfit has decided to give its budget friendly activity tracker a budget friendly makeover. Through a partnership with BaubleBar (a large retailer of costume fashion jewelry), Misfit is releasing the Helena Necklace and Bracelet. Both the necklace and bracelet feature an identical gold / diamond-ish locket to hold the Flash. While the locket isn’t understated, it isn’t bad looking (in the photos at least); it has a vintage / antique store vibe. Depending on whether you choose the necklace or bracelet, it comes with a 32 inch or 6 inch chain accordingly. The Helena Necklace and Bracelet will go on sale November 29th, exclusively at Target for $70. Oh, did we mention that price also includes the Misfit Flash tracker (in hot pink, of course) and a plastic, waterproof wristband and clip?! Not bad.

Target seems to be the go-to source for bedazzled fitness trackers. Our guess would be that it has something to do with a relatively high female customer base. Besides being the exclusive retailer of the BaubleBar version of the Misfit Flash, they also have exclusive rights to the jewelry-like metal versions of the VivoFit. While the execution isn’t always great, I think dressing up these devices makes them seem softer, less techie, and like they fit better into one’s life. We just wish they would take the approach of Bellabeat’s Leaf and design a device from the ground up for a non-tech-oriented audience.

Fossil Gets Serious About Wearables, Acquires Misfit

Fossil Q Misfit Shine Acquisition

If you were excited about Fossil’s highly publicized entrance into the wearable space a few weeks ago, things just got A LOT more interesting. Fossil has acquired Misfit, the makers of the very popular Flash and Shine activity trackers. The acquisition is valued at $260 million and will shift Misfit’s CEO, Sonny Vu, to Fossil’s CTO. It isn’t known exactly how Misfit and their products / IPs will be integrated into their new parent company, but Misfit has built a reputation for producing small, capable, inexpensive, and durable activity trackers, powered by relatively (compared to Fossil) mature phone apps. This expertise could be used by Fossil to help catapult the quality and capabilities of the company’s devices and software. It is not known how the acquisition will effect Misfit’s day-to-day operations or their current lineup of products; for the time being, I would not expect any significant changes.

Short term, I would look for elements of Misfit’s apps to be migrated into the Fossil Q app. Additionally I would expect to see key device firmware features such as Misfit’s auto-sleep-sensing algorithms make their way into the current Fossil wearable lineup. But we are most excited to see what future products are created from this acquisition. Misfit has some of the most distinctive looking wearable devices on the market. It would be fantastic to see some of the unique aesthetics from Misfit incorporated into future Fossil products. The Shine 2 is not only stunning though, it is also more featured pack than practically any wearable in its price point. This could bode particularly well for future Fossil Q Reveler and Dreamer models.

Misfit Shine 2 Is Thinner, Smarter, And More Connected

Misfit Shine 2 Shine2 Fitness Activity Tracker

Misfit has released a major update to their marquee fitness tracker. The Shine has always been one of the most svelte and fashionable trackers, constructed of colored aluminum and compatible with a range of accessories. It has been over two years since the original was released and Misfit has finally revisited it with the Shine 2, improving on the original in just about every way. First, what’s the same. It is still a disk-shaped aluminum, waterproof, wear anywhere, 6 month battery life fitness tracker. While the new version continues to be constructed of aluminum (although it is offered in fewer colors…for now), it is even thinner. To help shave off some of those millimeters, the physical button of the original has been replaced with a more responsive, capacitive touch surface. The LEDs have also been modified; the white-only lights of the original have been replaced with a ring of 12 multicolor LEDs on the Shine 2. The multicolor LEDs should allow users to better understand what the wearable is trying to communicate to them. Misfit has also updated the motion tracking hardware, adding a magnetometer to provide more accurate readings than the 3-axis accelerometer was capable of alone. It should also be noted that the Shine 2 is compatible with the company’s Link app, which allows you to use the device to control lights, music, or your phone’s camera. We took a look at it when we reviewed the Misfit Flash.

Perhaps the most notable addition to the Shine 2, though, is vibration. Like a lot of other fitness trackers, the Shine 2 can be configured to nudge you when it is time to move around. But Misfit has gone a step further and has enabled the wearable to behave as a connected device. The Shine 2 can vibrate to alert you to notifications and phone calls coming into your phone. For a device with a 6 month battery, this is an incredible feature! The wearable can also be used as a silent alarm clock, vibrating to wake you up.

The Shine 2 is on sale now for $99.00 and is available in black and (the ever trendy) rose gold. If none of these changes spark your interest, you can save some money and pick up the original version for $69.99. Misfit promises that accessories should be arriving soon and will include a new pendant, leather bands, and EkoCycle™ Field Bands.

The improvements to the Shine 2 strike us as being very purposeful, with every change and and addition solving a specific shortcoming. We are impressed with the changes that Misfit has made and think it will solve a lot of the issues we found with their entry level Flash. With the improvements to tracking and the addition of mobile connectivity, we believe that the Shine 2 is a compelling fitness tracker that will give Fitbit a lot of competition headed into the Holidays.
