LG Pulls LTE Equipped Watch Urbane 2 From Retail

LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition 2 LTE Android Wear

With Android Wear just being updated to support smartwatches with integrated LTE and allow for the carriers’ new number sharing ability, it seemed that everything was primed and set for the launch of the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition. In fact, AT&T began selling the wearable last Friday and Verizon was planning to launch sales today. Well that was the plan at least; LG has pulled the device from all retail stores and has instructed AT&T to offer purchasers a full refund. It is not clear what the issue is, but it must be serious to prompt such a large reshuffle at launch. All LG is disclosing is that there is “a hardware issue which affects the day-to-day functionality of the device.”

There is no word on when the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition might return to the market and it is entirely possible that LG might scrap the watch all together. This is a big blow to customers looking for a smartwatch that sheds the usually-required Bluetooth connection. Not only is the LG smartwatch the first Android Wear device with a built in cellular connection, there are no rumors of any manufacturer releasing a similar Android based wearable. From a quality standpoint, it is surprising that such a serious issue was found so late. Surely the device had been strenuously tested to identify any problems before LG began shipping tens of thousands of units to stores. If it is truly a “day-to-day” issue, how could it not have been caught? Certainly makes us think that LG hastily rushed the Watch Urbane 2 out the door just to make it to market for the holidays.

LG’s Watch Urbane 2 Is First LTE Android Wear Smartwatch

LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition

LG has announced the successor to their Android Wear smartwatch Watch Urbane. The original Watch Urbane only launched in May, so we are bit surprised to be hearing about the  Watch Urbane 2nd Edition already. While the original device was applauded for being one of the best Android Wear devices at the time it, most reviewers were still quick to find shortcomings. Among them, a bulky design, lackluster screen, no ambient light sensor, and internals that were about a year old. Thankfully LG’s Watch Urbane 2nd Edition will introduce some (small) hardware upgrades. First, the screen increases in pixel density (from 245ppi to 348ppi), RAM sees a slight bump (from 512MB to 768MB), and the battery shifts from 410 man to 570mAh. The improved battery isn’t just there to increase the watch’s run time though; the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition is the first Android Wear smartwatch to support cellular connectivity, with the device including a LTE antenna. LG previously released a WebOS version of the Urbane with a cellular antenna and Samsung makes Tizen based watches with a mobile connection, but this will be the first time the Android Wear OS and the vast library of smartwatch friendly apps offered through Google Play will be available to watch users who prefer to leave their phone behind. LG has not announced pricing or timing of the device.

Smartwatches with cellular connectivity are an interesting segment of the market. We get the appeal, but don’t see it becoming more than a niche segment for a while. First, I don’t think people are looking for one more device that they have to pay for and manage on their cellular plans. Second, I don’t think the technology is there yet. My phone barely makes it through the day and its battery is much more significant than what can be fit into a watch. Large strides need to be made in battery storage and mobile radio power efficiencies. Finally, I don’t think the software is there yet to make using an untethered smartwatch a compelling experience.

LG Is Working With Audi On WebOS Smartwatch

LG Audi webOS Smartwatch

In October we reported that LG briefly posted reference to webOS making its way onto the company’s wearable devices. While nothing was announced at CES, several astute reporters spotted a special Audi smartwatch from LG. The watch was on the show floor to demo interconnectivity between the device and a car and was likely not intended to be outed quite yet. The most intriguing aspect of the device is not the Audi tie-in, but that the unannounced device was discovered to be running webOS. We are likely to find out more at Mobile World Congress in February.

WebOS Might Be Making A Comeback In Wearable Tech

LG webOS

If a quickly removed LG-sponsored website is to be believed, webOS might be about to make a comeback attempt. The website promotes a forthcoming development kit for webOS powered smartwatches. Given Samsung’s efforts to develop Tizen as a viable alternative to Android, LG making this move is plausible. WebOS’s card-like interface could be a strong fit for a small device.

WebOS has had quite a storied life. Originally developed and launched by Palm in 2009 as the operating system for its next generation smartphone, within a year it was purchased along with the rest of the company by HP.  At the time HP said it paid the $1.2B price largely for the new operating system. In February of 2011 HP announced it would use webOS on all of its devices and in March they announced webOS would be able to run inside of Windows. Six short months later though, HP announced plans to sell its PC business and abandon development of webOS. In 2013, LG entered into an agreement with HP to license the operating system. Currently LG uses webOS to power the company’s televisions.

Designer vs. Brand Name: Is One More Important To The Success Of Wearables?

Brand vs DesignerIf you were to look at the product announcements coming out of IFA 2014 this week, you likely would believe that wearable technology was one of the hottest and most successful technology product segments out there. Sony has introduced its 3rd generation Smart Watch and Samsung has announced their 6th smart watch. Everyone is throwing their hat in the ring, so much so that the market is starting to get flooded with “me too” devices from companies such as Epson and Garmin. But the truth is that the segment has yet to have a break out hit. Nike and Fitbit have seen significant traction with their fitness bands and Pebble set Kickstarter records, but none are breakout stars, and Google is struggling to find public acceptance for Glass.

LG And Samsung Announce New Wearables Ahead Of Schedule

LG G Watch R Samsung Gear S

Hot on the heels of the news that in two weeks Apple likely will unveil their first entry into the wearable market, both LG and Samsung have announced new smart watches. Both devices represent firsts in smart watches. The LG device was not planned to be announced until next week at IFA 2014, with the company likely feeling pressure to announce something to distract from the Apple rumors. The LG G Watch R is a sharp looking device that marks the first 360 degree screen in a wearable (the Moto 360 is flat at the bottom). The screen is a 1.3inch Plastic OLED display that LG promises is viewable in sunlight. From the press images, the device appears very similar in look to a traditional watch. The G Watch R is a full featured Android Wear device with heart rate monitor. It is scheduled to ship sometime in Q4.
