Pebble Turns To Kickstarter To Launch Pebble Time

Pebble Time Kickstarter

Pebble has returned to its roots to launch the next version of the company’s smartwatch via Kickstarter. While it might seem like a bit of a cheat for a successful company to turn to Kickstarter to launch a product that they know will be a hit, that didn’t seem to put off interested buyers. In fact, Pebble Time broke its fundraising goal of $500K in 17 minutes and earned over $5M within 5 hours. The recently completed Kickstarter raised a total of $20.34M, shattering the previous Kickstarter record of $13.3M for The Coolest Cooler.

The Pebble Time utilizes a low resolution color e-ink screen (144 x 168) that is capable of displaying 64 colors. This screen affords the device an impressive 7 day battery life. It is important to note though that it is not a touch screen; you are restricted to the four buttons along the side and a microphone (that has limited use). Pebble Time will also bring the introduction of a new interface concept from Pebble.

Headphones That Double As A Wearable Display

Avegant Gylph Headphones Wearable Display

While headphones certainly aren’t high fashion, these days they are viewed by many to be a fashion accessory. With prices reaching past $500, it is easy to see why people take the design of their headphones seriously. Avegant is trying to help you get a bit more out of your headphones by integrating a wearable display into the band. Simply swing your the Avegant’s Glyph from the top of your head to in-front of your eyes and you are presented with a video headset. Probably not the best for walking down the street, but it could be just the thing if you commute via bus or train or fly a lot. The Kickstarter originated Glyph is expected to ship in Fall 2015. If you missed the Kickstarter, the device is available for preorder until Jan 15th for $499, after which it will jump to $599. Head past the break for the promotional video. No word on how the display will cope with stray hair gel.

Crowdsource Watch: TZOA Wearable Air Monitor

TZOA Environmental TrackerTZOA is a wearable device designed to track how clean the air around you really is. The sensor is designed to either be worn or attached to your backpack or purse. It measures air quality, UV levels, light, temperature, and humidity. The company views it as a fitness tracker but for the world around us. TZOA keeps track of your exposure, both indoors and out, to poor air quality and informs you when you need to seek some fresh air. TZOA is able to associate its readings with where you are and crowdsource the data to assemble a map of the air quality around you. The idea is to build environmental knowledge and help the user to understand the environment around us that is not always visible or tangible. By creating this understanding, the creators of TZOA hope to address the mental disconnect they feel spurs behaviors leading to climate change. We are all for anything that helps us lead a healthier life and breath a little easier! The device is almost halfway to meeting its fundraising gal on Kickstarter with 15 more days left. It is estimated to ship in August of 2015.

Everpurse Announces New Mini Clutch

Everpurse Mini

Everpurse has announced the successor to it’s original phone charging clutch.  The new Mini does away with one of the gee-wiz features of the original Kickstarter-backed bag, a cordless charging mat.  Instead, the new hard sided clutch’s latch doubles as a USB plug, requiring you to plug the purse/case directly into a USB charger.  While the charging mechanism seems like a solid step backwards, the reduced price and built-in wallet will likely bring in a new audience.  Through May 6 it is available for preorder at a $31 discount and is only available for the iPhone 5/5s.  It is scheduled to ship during summer of 2014, just a few short months before being outdated as the iPhone is rumored to shift to a larger size.

Crowdsource Watch: Mi.Mu Gloves

Mi.Mu Glove

Created with the help of Imogen Heap, the Mi.Mu gloves turns gestures into music.  The project is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter and has yet to reach it’s goal with only a few days left. The gloves work by capturing movements and hand gestures with various sensors.  That information is then communicated wirelessly to a computer that runs specially created software.  The software then maps the different movements or combination of movements to different tasks, from generating music to controlling faders and loops.  Head past the break for the video to find out more.
