US Movie Theaters Ban Wearable Devices With Camera

Movie Theaters Ban Wearable DevicesThe Motion Picture Associate of America and the National Association Of Theater Owners have announced a zero-tolerance ban on wearable devices capable of recording. The decision is not a huge surprise after the arrest of a movie goer earlier this year for wearing Google Glass. If caught wearing a device you will be asked to put it away or risk expulsion from the showing. If the theater believes you are recording the showing, law enforcement will be called. The MPAA and NATO have long been fighting to keep recording technology out of movie theaters and are fearful that wearable devices could enable anyone to easily record a movie without it being detected. While the ban covers all wearable devices with a camera, the focus is likely on Google Glass and similar headsets.

Google’s First Designer Glass By Diane Von Furstenberg

Diane Von Furstenberg Google Glass

When you hear the name of iconic designer Diane Von Furstenberg chances are the first thing that comes to mind are wrap dresses, not technology.  Well, she is working to change that.  During Spring Fashion Week last year in New York, Ms. Furstenberg had her models walk with the devices, participated in a Glass filmed video offering a first hand glimpse of NYFW (see after break), and provided narration for it.  Now her relationship with Google is about to translate to a wearable item.

The Google Glass community has coordinated a series of meet-ups across the U.S. saturday evening.  Try not be alarmed if you see a swarm of people wearing the device walk into your bar.  The aim of these gatherings is to help the public feel more comfortable around Glass users and to dispel myths people might have about Glass, how it works, and the privacy of those nearby.  Between these events and the guides Google published over the past few months, Google clearly feels there is a lot of work to be done to make non-users feel comfortable.  In February, Google released etiquette guidelines for users to help them not be labeled “glass-holes.”  In March Google released a document to try to dispel some of the myths regarding the device.

According to Reuters, Google has started lobbying in at least three states to prevent legislation banning people from using the headset while driving.  After a headline making incident in California where a woman wearing Google Glass while driving was ticketed, the legal battle over how you are allowed to use wearable tech is just beginning.  Google claims that it is too early in the experimental product’s lifecycle to introduce restrictions in use; Illinois state Senator Ira Silverstein responded that it was clear Google Glass is headed towards mass market and “Who are they fooling?”  With nationwide campaigns against distracted driving, it will be interesting to see how successful Google’s lobbying is.  There are currently eight states considering regulation of Google Glass.
