Apple Enters Wearable Market, Announces Apple Watch

Apple Watch

After years of speculation, Apple today announced the Apple Watch. While the wearable device will not ship until early 2015, the company likely wanted to get ahead of any potential product leaks and disrupt holiday sales of existing smart watches on the market. Marking a first for smart watches, the device will ship in multiple materials, finishes, and sizes with a large selection of interchangeable bands. Earlier we discussed how important individuality is for a fashion piece (which a watch is) to be successful, clearly Apple understands that. While Apple Watch’s varied product matrix is sure to make consumers happy, the general consensus is that the design could have been more unique. While competitors are releasing round and curved displays, Apple opted for a basic rectangular screen. Interestingly, the look is very reminiscent of the original iPhone. Hopefully the usability of the device makes up for any design shortcomings.

Apple Announces Apple Pay, Includes Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s

Apple Pay iPhone 6

During Apple’s big iPhone event today, the company unveiled its version of contactless payment. The feature will roll out in October and will be exclusive to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Cards are added by taking a photo of them and then Apple checks with the credit card provider to authenticate that it is yours. In order to make a payment via Apple Pay, the user does not need to load an app or turn on the phone, instead simply press the Touch ID home button and the phone will gently vibrate to acknowledge successful payment. Apple is also hoping to address security concerns related to contactless payment.

Nordstrom Rumored To Use New NFC Payment Technology

Near Field Communication TerminalIf the rumors are correct, tomorrow Apple will unveil NFC payments as part of the next version of the iPhone. Nordstrom has been rumored to be an early partner with Apple in regards to the payment system and to be ready to updated point-of-sale systems across their stores. With existing NFC payment systems, information is transmitted freely between the device and terminal. Apple reportedly is planning on utilizing a tokenization system it developed that allows for unique encryption of your sensitive information as it is transmitted between the device and terminal. The token changes for every transaction made. If true, this modification to NFC payments would provide significantly more security and help address fraud concerns.

Designer vs. Brand Name: Is One More Important To The Success Of Wearables?

Brand vs DesignerIf you were to look at the product announcements coming out of IFA 2014 this week, you likely would believe that wearable technology was one of the hottest and most successful technology product segments out there. Sony has introduced its 3rd generation Smart Watch and Samsung has announced their 6th smart watch. Everyone is throwing their hat in the ring, so much so that the market is starting to get flooded with “me too” devices from companies such as Epson and Garmin. But the truth is that the segment has yet to have a break out hit. Nike and Fitbit have seen significant traction with their fitness bands and Pebble set Kickstarter records, but none are breakout stars, and Google is struggling to find public acceptance for Glass.

Apple’s Sept 9th Event Is At Site Of Original Mac Announcement

Apple Invite 9.9.2014

Apple has sent out invitations for the previously rumored Sept 9th press event. The invite features nothing more than a softly lit white Apple logo and the coy tagline of “Wish we could say more,” offering very few clues about what to expect. The location of the event is notable though. It is scheduled to take place at the Flint Center For The Performing Arts in Cupertino. This is vastly larger venue that Apple has only rarely used in the past (almost 2500 seats vs Yerba Buena Center’s 750). In fact, it is the venue where the original Macintosh was introduced 30 years ago. To add even more intrigue, a temporary 3 story structure has been constructed for the event at the Flint Center and, according to reports, is surrounded with security personnel. Image of the structure past the break:

Apple Rumored To Unveil iWatch Device at Sept 9 Event

Apple iWatch Rumor

While we don’t love to report on rumors around here, without question the elephant in the room of wearable devices is Apple’s forthcoming watch/band. It seems like the cloak of secrecy will finally be lifted at the company’s September 9th iPhone event. Extremely little is known about the rumored device, but Apple has been on a hiring spree over the past few years. They have hired medical sensor experts, key members of Nike’s Sports Band team, and high ranking luxury fashion personnel. Similar to the original iPhone, it seems Apple is poised to announce the product months before shipping in an effort to stem leaked information from the supply chain and FCC. iOS 8 is believed to be integral to the wearable, with technologies such as HealthKit and HomeKit rumored to be tightly integrated. Handoff and Continuity, both new with iOS 8, could also prove important. Let us know what you think the announcement will bring in the comments.

Apple Announces Wellness Aggregator Health

iOS 8 Health App

Apple announced its widely expected Health app at WWDC this week.  While differing slightly from the rumored HealthBook app, Health serves the same purpose.  Using the HealthKit APIs, developers can enable their medical or wearable device to communicate with the app.  Health will then aggregate the data from a variety of devices into one unified location.  The idea is that your calorie and sleep data from your FitBit will be next to your weight and MBI info from your Withings scale, which can be displayed with your iHealth glucose monitor readings.  Collecting data from various 3rd party hardware is great, but one can easily see the importance of the Health app if Apple’s health-centric smart watch becomes a reality.
