Best Buy Accelerates Apple Watch Roll Out On Strong Sales

Apple Watch Best Buy Accelerated Launch

While Apple isn’t planning to release Apple Watch sales numbers anytime soon, we are getting our first idea of demand for the device. Barely 3 weeks ago the Apple Watch launched at 100 Best Buy locations. At that time, the electronics retailer announced that over the next several months they would roll the device out to a total of 300 locations. Apparently things went well. This morning Hubert Joly, CEO of Best Buy, announced that sales for the smartwatch have been “so strong” that the company is accelerating its roll out. Around 900 Best Buy locations will begin to stock the Watch by September 4 and by the end of the month all 1050 Best Buy locations and 30 Best Buy Mobile stores will offer the Apple Watch. The news also coincides with an announcement that Best Buy is expanding and updating their 740 Apple store-within-a-stores.

The smartwatch market is beginning to mature as it starts to find its feet. With devices such as Olio, Gear S2, the second Moto 360, and Apple Watch running watchOS 2 hitting that market, it is clear the device makers are beginning to understand the shortcomings of previous devices as well as the limitations of smartwatches. As the devices become more refined, it is easier for them to find an audience. It will be interesting one day to see actual sales numbers because I believe that 2015 has been a massive year for wearable device growth.

Best Buy To Start Selling Apple Watch August 7th

Best Buy Apple Watch

Been thinking about an Apple Watch but you want to check one out in person first and you don’t live near an Apple Store. Well good news, Best Buy announced Sunday it will be the first national retailer to sell the Apple device. Initially it will only be for sale in 100 locations, with another 200 added by the holidays. In total the chain will carry 16 models of the stainless steel and, less expensive, aluminum versions of the Watch. They will also stock approximately 50 accessories, including bands and watch charging stands. The additional sales outlets follows reports of conflicting sales estimates, with Slice Intelligence claiming a sharp drop in sales while Apple states that sales are stronger than ever. The Apple Watch is now for sale in 19 countries with New Zealand, Russia, and Turkey being added to the list at the end of this week.

Nike Settles Class Action Suit Over FuelBand

Nike FuelBand Class Action Suit

Do you have a Nike FuelBand and would like a few extra greenbacks in your pocket? Well, luckily for you, a settlement has been reached over a 2013 class action suit brought against Nike and Apple over the device. According to the plaintiffs, led by class representative Carolyn Levin, despite advertisements and claims that the FuelBand accurately tracked activity, the band did not accurately record calories burnt, steps taken, or NikeFuel points. They alleged both Apple and Nike knew of the product’s deficiencies yet continued to sell it. Nike has agreed to pay out $2.4 million to band owners while it appears Apple will have no penalties.

If you purchased a FuelBand anytime between January 19th, 2012 and June 17th, 2015, you are eligible to be a class member. By filing out an online claims form by January 6th, 2016, you can receive either a $15 payment or a $25 Nike gift card. If you are eligible, you should have received an email this past Friday.

Despite Reports, Apple Watch Users Extremely Satisfied

Apple Watch Satisfaction Wristly

Despite conflicting reports of sluggish sales numbers, editorials of waining interest, and proclamations of a dud, according to a survey released this week user satisfaction with the Apple Watch is actually largely positive. In fact according to Wristly, who conducted the survey, the satisfaction numbers beat those of the 1st generation iPhone and iPad. 97% of Apple Watch users stated that they were either “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” with the device. Wristly also broke down those numbers by user type and the “Non-tech User” group had the strongest response to the device (99% satisfaction). This is an important category for Apple since at the end of the day the Apple Watch is a consumer electronic that needs to be embraced by the mass populace to be successful. It is also worth noting that the “Tech Insider” group also viewed the device favorably, with a 96% satisfaction rating. Not all the numbers are rosy though; clearly Apple is loosing grip on its famous “ease of use” (also an issue for its Apple Music service). Head past the break to see the numbers broken out:

Mobile Wallet Update: Apple, Google, Samsung, CurrentC

Mobile Payments Summary June2015 Samsung Android Apple CurrentC

The march towards making mobile payments part of our normal lives continues at a slow pace. Given expense of the required infrastructure updates, it is not surprising. But the good news for the end user is that things are continuing to improve and move forward.

Both Google and Samsung have announced new / improved mobile payment systems, unimaginatively called Android Pay and Samsung Pay. At Google’s I/O conference the other week, the company detailed their new Android Pay platform, superseding Google Wallet for most mobile payments. While Google Wallet requires a virtual debit card which is refilled, Android Pay works similarly to Apple Pay; Google has worked with credit card issuers to allow the cards to be loaded onto the device and then charges are made anonymously with a tokenized card number. Android Pay is expected to launch this Fall with the Android M update. Having Apple and Google utilize a similar system is great news for the consumer as it will likely push the adoption of NFC terminals at retailers.

Samsung announced their Samsung Pay system this Spring as part of the Galaxy S6 unveiling.

Apple Announces watchOS 2 With Native Apps

Apple watchOS 2 Announcement

At Apple’s WWDC conference this week the company announced watchOS 2. The new operating system will allow 3rd party developers to create apps that fully live on the Apple Watch and utilize of all the sensors and inputs available. With version 1 of the operating system, 3rd party apps only had access to the touch screen and were required to stream from an iPhone. This change will have a huge impact on the depth, quality, performance of apps. It will be exciting to see what developers dream of! The beta of the new OS is available now to developers and will officially launch this fall, likely along side iOS 9. Besides development tools, watchOS 2 does not offer much else new. The update, announced 6 weeks after Apple Watch started shipping, is likely comprised of features that were originally scheduled to be included at launch (the “new” watch faces, for example, had already been shown last September) but were not ready in time.

Initial Thoughts About The Apple Watch

Apple Watch Review Coming

The Apple Watch has been shipping for almost a week. The team at Circuits and Cable Knit was lucky enough to get our hands on one. Almost 7 days in, the Watch has been a very interesting experience. We are excited to be providing a review but want to do it right. With that in mind, we have decided an extended use review was important. Yes, the Watch is an amazing little device, but how will we feel 4 weeks from now when we strap it on our wrists? Will it become something to rely upon or will we even take notice if we forget it one day? A device like this is so nuanced that we have come to the conclusion that this is the only fair way to review the Apple Watch.

That said, here are some brief initial thoughts.
