Gold Moto 360 And Metal Bands Go On Sale

Gold Metal Moto 360 Band

After briefly appearing on Amazon last week, the metal band Moto 360s have gone on sale. They are available in either black or silver, or as Motorola oddly calls them, light or dark. The new all metal options sell for $299. Accompanying them is a new gold color option and a silver version of the watch with a brown leather band.

In addition to releasing the metal versions of the Android Wear watch, Motorola also announced two upcoming updates to the Moto 360.  First is a Motorola Connect update that will allow customization of the watch faces, including style and background.  Second is the addition of Moto Body to the watch. Moto Body is the companies activity tracking software, which keeps track of distance, calories, and heart rate.

A Smartwatch Designed For Women: Omate’s Lutetia

Omate Lutetia Women's Smartwatch

As any tech-intrigued woman is quick to point out, all smartwatch offerings to date have been decidedly targeted towards a male audience. Between the look and the size (the Moto 360 is a giant 46mm), these are not devices that are going to be gracing many woman’s wrists. Omate is hoping to change that with the announcement of their Lutetia watch. While still not diminutive at 40mm in diameter and 12mm thick, the device clearly has a softer, more elegant appearance designed to be worn by a woman. The Lutetia pairs with both iOS and Android devices. It utilizes an always-on reflective screen to achieve an entire week of battery life. The long battery life means that the watch is somewhat feature limited, designed primarily to alert the user to notifications. The stainless steel watch can be pre-ordered today in either silver, gold, or rose-gold colors for $169. It is expected to ship in time for the Holidays.

Will.i.am announces Puls Smartwatch With 3G Connectivity

Will.I.Am Puls Smartwatch

After teasing that he was working on wearable tech back in April, Will.i.am has unveiled his Puls smart watch (video after the break). The Android powered device will be on sale in time for this Holiday season. Puls has a cuff design with the battery integrated into the bracelet. It does not require a phone, utilizing its own 3G connectivity provided by partners AT&T and O2. The watch features a curved touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, accelerometer, 16GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. On the software side, when the device ships it will include connectivity to Facebook and Twitter as well as Salesforce. A Siri-like digital assistant, “AneedA,” will help you make and remember appointments and communicate with contacts. The bracelet also has integrated speakers for phone calls and music playback. While not the most thrilling device, perhaps the most unique thing about it are the accessories announced by Will.i.am.

Apple Enters Wearable Market, Announces Apple Watch

Apple Watch

After years of speculation, Apple today announced the Apple Watch. While the wearable device will not ship until early 2015, the company likely wanted to get ahead of any potential product leaks and disrupt holiday sales of existing smart watches on the market. Marking a first for smart watches, the device will ship in multiple materials, finishes, and sizes with a large selection of interchangeable bands. Earlier we discussed how important individuality is for a fashion piece (which a watch is) to be successful, clearly Apple understands that. While Apple Watch’s varied product matrix is sure to make consumers happy, the general consensus is that the design could have been more unique. While competitors are releasing round and curved displays, Apple opted for a basic rectangular screen. Interestingly, the look is very reminiscent of the original iPhone. Hopefully the usability of the device makes up for any design shortcomings.

Motorola Officially Launches Moto 360 Watch (UPDATED)

Moto 360 Goes On Sale

UPDATE: Despite very mixed reviews, according to reports the Moto 360 sold out from all retailers within an hour of launch. There is no word on the number of units sold.

Starting today you can pickup a Moto 360 Android Wear smart watch for $250 at Best Buy stores or via the Motorola or Google Play online stores. There will be a $300 version with metal band released this fall. The watch was originally announced back in March but details such as price and battery life were only made available today. When the device was originally announced, its unique round design stood out against the competition. Six months later though, the watch’s “flat tire” shape has lost some of its original appeal, with LG recently having announced a truly round device. While the Moto 360 has an appealing feature set, its battery life apparently cripples the device.

LG And Samsung Announce New Wearables Ahead Of Schedule

LG G Watch R Samsung Gear S

Hot on the heels of the news that in two weeks Apple likely will unveil their first entry into the wearable market, both LG and Samsung have announced new smart watches. Both devices represent firsts in smart watches. The LG device was not planned to be announced until next week at IFA 2014, with the company likely feeling pressure to announce something to distract from the Apple rumors. The LG G Watch R is a sharp looking device that marks the first 360 degree screen in a wearable (the Moto 360 is flat at the bottom). The screen is a 1.3inch Plastic OLED display that LG promises is viewable in sunlight. From the press images, the device appears very similar in look to a traditional watch. The G Watch R is a full featured Android Wear device with heart rate monitor. It is scheduled to ship sometime in Q4.

Netatmo’s June UV Tracker Starts Shipping

Netatmo June UV TrackerNetamo’s June UV tracker has begun to ship. We recently covered the device when we looked at various UV sensors on the market. Easily the best looking UV monitor to go to market, the device pairs with your phone via Bluetooth 4LE. The device’s app then tracks your daily UV exposure and alerts you when you need to don a hat, apply sunscreen, or seek shade. The $99 device has received some mixed early reviews, with complaints about connectivity issues and that it is not water resistant. We expect to post our own review on the device shortly, but in the meantime head past the break for Netamo’s video about the device.
