Self Lacing Nike MAGs Are Confirmed for 2015 Release

Nike Mag Self LacingIt was one of the first posts on our blog and it is back in the news again, almost exactly a year later. We have finally reached 2015, the Future from Back To The Future 2. We don’t have flying cars, commercial hover boards, holographic billboards, or Jaws 19. But Miami does have a baseball team and, if Nike has their way, we will finally be able to own self-lacing Nike MAGs. Tinker Hatfield is the man who designed the original MAG for the 1989 movie and he still works for Nike. He took the stage in Long Beach recently at an event for the Agenda Trade Show. Among the topics discussed was a possible 2015 re-launch of the MAG sneakers but this time with a self-lacing mechanism. Hatfield confirmed that he has a team working hard to deliver the MAGs in 2015, stating that they still have “11 and two-thirds months left in 2015.” Last year Nike filed for a self-lacing patent, depicting a shoe very similar to the MAGs (images after the break). It would be safe to expect the shoes to be released either around the 30th anniversary of the original movie in July or near the October 21st date that Doc and Marty jump to. Hopefully the 2015 version of the MAGs will not be as limited run as the 2011 version.

Skechers Merges Footware And Gaming

Sketchers Simon SneakersSkechers has decided that shoes just aren’t enough fun. So at CES the company unveiled a sneaker that has the classic 1978 game Simon integrated into the footwear. In the 37 years since the memory game was introduced, Simon has gone from Frisbee size (running off of 2 D cell batteries and a 9-volt) to being able to be integrated comfortably into the side of a pair of shoes. Unfortunately for those of us who get easily bored commuting on the train, the shoes are only available in kid sizes for the time being. The boys version of the sneaker includes the original version of Simon while the girls version trades out the classic buttons and layout for 2 rows of flower shaped buttons. Expect to find the Simon Skechers on shelves in February for $65.

3D Printed Flexible Sneakers

3D Printed Recreus Sneakers

Recreus has released plans for a 3d printed sneaker.  Utilizing a new, extremely flexible extruded material, the Sneakerbot II is pushing the ball forward on what 3D printers are able to accomplish with footwear.  No longer hard and rigid, Recreus’s Filaflex material claims to be “the most elastic filament on the market.”  Indeed, a video posted along with the plans on Thingiverse shows the sneakers being crumpled into a ball and then retaining it’s shape. While impressive, Recreus’s website is light on information about the new material (displaying only countdown to the website’s launch…in over a year!).  Also it is worth noting that the size of the shoe is going to be limited by the size of your printing platform, so don’t expect to see these on your favorite NBA player anytime soon.  Head past the break for a video of the sneaker being printed.

Self Lacing Nike Air Mag (a.k.a. the Back To The Future Shoe) Possibly Arriving in 2015

Nike Air Mag 2011 Edition

In 2011, Nike released the super-limited-edition Air Mag for sale on eBay.  The shoe was one of the gee-wiz items Marty encounters in the future in Back To The Future 2 (we are still waiting for the hoverboard).  The 2011 release of the shoe was lacking one key feature from the movie: self-tying laces; that might soon change.  During an appearance for the Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab in New Orleans, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield was asked about whether we would see self-tying laces in 2015.
