Snapchat Spectacles Launch Via Popup Snapbot Vending Machines

Snap Snapchat Spectacles Sunglasses Blogging Video Snapbot

A few weeks ago Snapchat announced that the company was going to transition from simply being an app/service to a technology company. The first part of the transition was rebranding the company as Snap and the second part was the introduction a new piece of wearable tech. The company’s first foray into the wearable space is a pair of glasses, simply called Spectacles. Think of them as something in between Google Glass and a life-blogging device, neither of which have faired very well in the market place. The failure of both of those devices likely has something to do with them being wearable recorders, which they also have in common with Spectacles. When we originally saw the announcement of Snapchat’s Spectacles, to us they seemed more like a gag product than something people would actually wait in line to spend $130 on. But apparently we were very wrong. Last week popup vending machines featuring the Spectacles, called Snapbots, began appearing, drawing tremendous lines. We never would have guessed it but Snap’s Spectacles seem to be a hit, for at least the 6 days out from launch. In fact, the connected glasses are reselling for as much as $5000 on eBay. But what exactly are they?

Shwood Eyewear Crafts Sunglasses With Recycled Newspaper

Shwood Newspaper Sunglasses

Portland, OR based Shwood Eyewear has created a method to apply a veneer of recycled newspaper to its sunglasses. The company specializes in wooden framed glasses which they craft by hand in-house. Shwood, a self proclaimed “experimental brand,” was looking for a way to restore wood-like properties to old newspaper. They developed a method to laminate 1600 feet of news print together into a 4″ diameter “log.” By cutting the log into 1/8″ slices, it took on the properties of a wood veneer. The glasses are certainly striking, especially the model with the newspaper front (if you look closely you can make out letters from the print). Unfortunately the Canby Select version, the best looking of the bunch, is already sold out; the company only made 50 of them! If you are interested though, there are still two other variants available. Head past the break for an excellent video on how Shwood creates the newspaper glasses:

Ray Ban Launches Wayfarer Made From Solid Denim

Ray Ban Denim Wayfarer

Just in time for the holidays, Ray Ban has begun to sell a version of Wayfarers made from solid denim. The product of two years of research, these Wayfarers utilize a unique construction method to achieve this look. The glasses are made from 4 to 5 layers of high thread count, thick denim. Actual denim is used resulting in every pair having a slightly unique look. The sheets of denim are sandwiched with a polypropylene and acetate mixture to adhere together and create additional rigidity. The delicate process of precisely layering and fusing the materials together has to occur in a high temperature environment, reaching around 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The eyewear is then hand finished. The denim Wayfarers are available for sale now in 6 colors for $199.
